Have a Plan for Social Networking…

I thought this commentary, from Marketing Daily was pretty interesting:  “Social Media Mapping: Some Discipline, Please”.

It covers a lot of ground, but for me the big takeaway is the importance of having some sort of plan for how your firm uses social networking.  The inclination is to sigh heavily and say “Everyone else is doing Twitter.  I guess I’d better start.”  But its valuable to at least rough in some of the details about what you’ll be doing; how much time/money you’re going to commit and what you hope to accomplish.  Of course when you first start to play, you’ll need to rapidly refine and tweak that plan–because you probably got a fair number of things wrong initially.  Still, not having a plan at all (or having a fuzzy one in your head) keeps you from having any idea whether you’re on the right track or not.
